   After you have filled your ITR(Income Tax Returns) form, the next and final step is to verify it. If you haven’t verified it, the return will not be considered valid as per income tax laws.

If you upload your ITR on the e-filing website, you have 120 days to verify your return. There are six methods to verify your tax returns (that need not be audited).

1. Aadhar card based OTP:

Your mobile number has to be linked with Aadhar and registered in the “Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)” database if you want to verify your ITR using Aadhar based onetime password. With this method, an SMS with the OTP is sent to your registered mobile number and you will have to enter the OTP in the box required and click on “Submit”. The Aadhar based OTP is valid only for half an hour.

2. Generating Electronic Verification code via Net banking:

If you have availed the Net banking facility of your bank account, you can verify your ITR. If you aren’t logged in on the e-filing website, log in to your bank account on your banks website. Click on the e-verify option and you will be re-directed to the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department. Select “My Account” and then select “Generate EVC” option. A 10-digit alpha-numeric code, which is valid for 72 hours, would be dispatched to your email address and phone number. Visit the ‘e-verify’ option in ‘My Account’ tab in order to verify your return and select the option ‘I have EVC already’. Enter the OTP sent to you and click on “Submit”.

3. Generating Electronic Verification code via bank account:

You are allowed to e-verify your return using your bank account by the Income Tax Department. However, this is available only for some banks so check if your bank offers this facility. If your bank does, read further. You’ve to visit the profile settings in your e-filing account to pre-validate your bank account. Enter your details. Your PAN and name should match with the bank account record for the pre-validation to be a success. After the pre-validation is done, select ‘Generate EVC’ option under the ‘My Account’ tab. A code will be dispatched to your number. Click on ‘e-verify’ in ‘My Account’ tab and enter the code. The mobile number mentioned by you to validate your bank account has to match the mobile number mentioned in the e-filing website of income tax.

4. Generating Electronic Verification code through bank ATM:

The Income Tax Department lets certain bank ATMs to offer this facility to generate code. Once you have checked if your bank ATM offers this facility, if it does, you need to visit the ATM and swipe your card. Select ‘Pin for e-filing’. You will receive EVC, which is valid for 72 hours, at your mobile number. Log in, visit the “e-verify returns” option and select the ITR to verify it. Click ‘Already generated EVC through bank ATM.’ Enter your EVC. If you have verified your ITR using any electronic method, no need to send ITR-V to the income tax department. 

5. Verifying tax returns through DEMAT account:

You can utilize your Demat account to verify your ITR if you are a Demat account holder. This method is akin to the bank account based ITR validation. Pre-validate your Demat account to verify your tax return. Visit profile settings and list the necessary details. Your mobile number and email Id has to match what is linked to the Demat account.

The pre-validation process is automatic and takes less than two hours and if any error occurs, you will be notified via email. Your Demat account can be used to generate EVC only after your details are validated by your depository. Visit ‘Generate EVC’ option and click on ‘Generate EVC through Demat Account number.’ Enter the EVC you got to verify your ITR with success.

6. Sending signed ITR-V/Acknowledgement receipt:

If verifying your ITR using electronic methods isn’t possible, then you can physically get your ITR verified. Dispatch a signed copy of ITR-V (Acknowledgement receipt) to the Income Tax department. Just keep in mind these things:-

ITR-V is a one-page document which must be signed in blue ink and sent only by two ways, ordinary post or speed post.

No need to send any supporting document with ITR-V.

When your ITR is received by the tax department, you will get intimation that is solely for receipt of ITR-V through SMS. The intimation for processing of tax return is separate.
